Those members who already regularly contribute to the Charity Trust should review their donations annual to ensure that an appropriate donation is being made. Additionally, Members are encouraged to support both our Company's special appeals as well as the Lord Mayor's Appeal.

Our Honorary Freeman & Chaplain, Rev'd John Cowling, is looking for financial support towards the provision of 150 kneelers for our Chaplaincy Church in Hart Street. Those of you who attended the 2003 Installation and Service of Rededication at St. Olave's will remember his 'commercial' and will no doubt have seen the lovely sample kneeler on display. John has organised the experts to make them and now he needs the money to pay them! The Court is recommending that members of the Livery, who wish to support this appeal, should contribute to the cost of one or more kneelers, at £75.00 each, and your cheque should be made out to the WCEC Charity Account, in order that we can claim 'Gift Aid' on your donation. Click on the highlighted Application Form to download a form for you to return to the Clerk, with your cheque, at your earliest convenience. The Clerk will report on how many kneelers the Company has paid for later in the year.
Lord Mayor's Appeal 2008 - Investing in healthy lives, healthy vision, healthy futures
Message From the Lord Mayor: My charitable theme for the year is investing in healthy lives, healthy vision, healthy futures as it most encapsulates the work of my two chosen charities Wellbeing of Women and ORBIS. My wife and I have long supported both organisations and we know that the funds raised through this Appeal will make a big difference to their work. I hope that during my year in office we can make a big impact by supporting research into women’s health in order to ensure that every
Wellbeing of Women is the only UK charity dedicated to solving the health problems that solely affect women. - Around 250,000 UK pregnancies end in miscarriage - Over 50% of stillbirths remain unexplained - 1 in 3 live births in England and Wales are born preterm - 25% of premature births are caused by pre-eclampsia
1 in 2 women in the UK will suffer from a gynaecological problem that will devastate and, in some cases, claim their lives. Wellbeing of Women is the only UK charity dedicated to funding research that will benefit these women and their families. The charity also support the training and development of specialists who will diagnose and treat them. Wellbeing of Women works in partnership with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is delighted and honoured to have Sarah Brown as our patron. Over the past 40 years Wellbeing of Women has invested in funding the very best in medical research and training. Every woman living in the UK since 1964 will have benefitted from advances in healthcare made possible by research grants from Wellbeing of Women, such as ultrasound and cervical cancer screening. Half of all women in the UK will experience a reproductive health problem during their lifetime such as trouble conceiving, intensely painful periods or gynaecological cancer. Wellbeing of Women is the only charity dedicated to solving all of these problems through pioneering medical research. Yet despite our best efforts, we still receive more research grant applications than we are able to fund. Click here to visit www.wellbeingofwomen.org.uk
ORBIS International strives to eliminate avoidable blindness and restore sight in the developing world: - 37 million people worldwide are blind, 75% of these people do not need to be - Approximately 500,000 children go blind every year – almost one every minute - Over half of these children will die within 2 years of losing their sight - About 50% of all cases of childhood blindness can be easily prevented or treated
ORBIS is a founding member of ‘Vision 2020 - the right to sight’ a global initiative led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to end avoidable blindness by the year 2020. The WHO estimates there to be 37 million blind people in the world and an additional 124 million who have vision so poor that normal life is impossible. Yet an estimated 75% of those suffering do not need to be blind, the techniques and tools exist to treat their condition but 90% of these people live in developing countries where access to basic healthcare let alone specialist eye care is scarce. ORBIS’s vision is of a world where no one is needlessly blind and where everyone has access to quality eye care even in the poorest developing nations. Working in partnership with local hospitals, ORBIS implements long term sustainable projects to strengthen their capacity and them with the skills, knowledge and equipment they need in order to provide services to their community in the long-term, ensuring that sight saving treatment is available to the people who need it most.
